Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a 2002 fantasy film, based on the novel of the same name by J.K. Rowling. It is also the second instalment in the film series based on Rowling's novels, following Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone (2001). The film was produced by David Heyman and stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. The latter two have returned from Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone to reprise their roles for this sequel. The film follows Harry as he and his friends investigate a secret chamber in Hogwarts and discover an evil creature called the ‘Chamber of Secrets,’ which only Voldemort (the antagonist) can control. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released on 15 November 2002 in the United Kingdom and North America. It received positive reviews and made much more money than its predecessor, grossing over $879 million worldwide, becoming the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time at that point. It was nominated for many awards, including the Academy Award for Best Art Direction. The film opens with Harry Potter (Radcliffe) and Ron Weasley (Grint) riding the Hogwarts Express. Harry still has a strained relationship with Hermione Granger (Watson), due to his previously unanswered questions about the identity of the ‘Half-Blood Prince’. When they arrive at school, Draco Malfoy (Talfan) insults Ron and insinuates that he wishes to participate in more dangerous activities than usual, but his father prevents this. Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) then escorts the first-year students to the boat that will take them across the lake to Hogwarts, where a message written on the stone walls in green blood announces that a ‘Chamber of Secrets’ has been opened. The new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart (Kennedy), escorts Harry and Ron to their class. After a mishap with a malfunctioning wand, Lockhart reveals himself as an arrogant wizard with two left hands. In Divination class, Professor Trelawney (Thompson) predicts Harry's death. The class is shocked, but Hermione notes that it is unlikely she would be the first person to die this year, as the next-to-last person to die was Cedric Diggory in June. Upon discovering a message from ‘Mudblood’ carved into the back of his own hand, Harry reveals his identity as heir of the "Boy Who Lived", and that he survived Voldemort's attack seven years previously. Lockhart then announces that they will be heading for the Chamber of Secrets. Harry is placed in Slytherin whenever Ron is in Gryffindor due to Harry's ‘muggle’ blood. cfa1e77820
